10 educational facilities that prioritize energy self-sufficiency
The International Energy Agency (IEA) highlights that operating buildings accounts for “30 percent of global final energy consumption and 26 percent of global energy-related emissions.” The 26 percent figure equates to a combination of direct emissions (8 percent) from buildings themselves and indirect emissions (18 percent) from producing the electricity and heat that buildings use.

An Schoenmaekers completes an extensive renovation of two terraced houses and a textile factory in the center of Sint-Niklaas
The owners of a dilapidated plot in the center of Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, saw it as an opportunity to breathe new life into an undervalued place with a rich history. The plot holds two row houses and a textile factory at the back, a reminder of the textile industry that used to define Sint-Niklaas.

An Schoenmaekers designed an extensive renovation of the two terraced houses and the textile factory that uses the existing elements as much as possible and transforms it into a modern, close to energy-neutral, home. Existing parts were intentionally left raw and new additions are clearly defined as new.

Gouwe Zone, CO2-free offices
GouweZone is a sustainable office complex in Gouda for the luxury rental sector that is part of 'Gouwe Poort', a mixed industrial estate in the heart of the Randstad. The city of Gouda wanted to transform this area into a desirable office location that will be named one of the top ten of Dutch business and office parks. GouweZone is one of the first projects of this restructuring. The client asked for a sustainable, low-energy office complex with a long life span, high in comfort and with an architectonic top design. Positive buildingEricis calls this type of sustainable development 'positive building'.
